At Shettleston Smile Dental Practice, we provide both partial dentures and full dentures, depending on how many natural teeth you have remaining and what will work best for your mouth.
Types of dentures
Full Dentures
Full dentures replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. They are designed to restore appearance, support facial muscles and improve eating and speaking.

Types of dentures
Full Dentures

What to expect
Dentures are carefully planned and made to suit your bite, gum shape and appearance. It can take a short period to adjust to wearing new dentures, but most patients adapt well with time.
Your dentist may recommend adjustments after fitting to improve comfort and function.
Looking After Your Dentures
To keep your dentures clean and working well:
- Clean them every day
- Remove and rinse them after meals where possible
- Clean your gums and any remaining natural teeth
- Store them safely when not in use
- Attend regular dental check-ups to monitor fit and comfort

Removable Partial Denture Options
Your dentist has discussed partial removable denture options with you. Some types of dentures are more comfortable and better tolerated than others and this may be reflected in the price. The following information is intended as a guide but will not cover every aspect of partial dentures.
Not all dentures are available under NHS regulations. For specific cosmetic dentures, private treatment is best suited. A referral to a specialist Prosthodontist is also an option but will likely be more expensive.
Acrylic Dentures
Acrylic (plastic) dentures are the most budget friendly option. They are made with a hard, pink plastic.
They are several millimeters thick and tend to be the bulkiest and loosest but also the cheapest denture available. They tend to cover a lot of the soft tissues in your mouth and are generally a lot more noticeable to wear than other options. Clasps can be added to these but this can incur additional costs.
You can add onto these dentures if you lose more teeth.
Cobalt-Chrome
Chrome based dentures are made with a metal alloy base and lined with pink acrylic and teeth over areas where you are missing teeth. They are very demanding and time consuming to make with little room for error; this is reflected in the price.
They incorporate clasps and rests to allow for a much tighter and more comfortable fit however these clasps are silver in colour. They may be visible if they have to be placed on front teeth. They can be made thinner, lighter and stronger than acrylic dentures to allow you to feel more of your mouth and taste more of your food. These are generally much better tolerated than an acrylic denture.
You can add teeth onto these to an extent if you lose further teeth.
Flexible Dentures
Flexible dentures are made with a softer and more flexible plastic. Again, these are demanding and time consuming to make with little room for error. Only certain laboratories are certified and trained to make these.
These dentures are generally very well tolerated and liked by patients. They cover less of your soft tissues than acrylic dentures and incorporate clasps however these are pink/gum coloured so look more natural than a chrome clasp. They are lighter, less bulkier and stronger than acrylic dentures.
The main disadvantage of these is that they are not adaptable. If you lose further teeth, you cannot add teeth onto these and if teeth de-bond it is more complicated and expensive to add them back on/repair.
Immediate Dentures
Immediate dentures are designed to be fitted on the day you are getting teeth extracted so you do not need to have a gap in your mouth. They are acrylic and tend to be much poorer fitting as they involve a lot of guess-work when making in the lab. These are designed to be a temporary denture, they require fixative use, they become loose over time and are not usually worn for longer than 6 months before replacement.
Please be aware, not all of these options may be suitable for your mouth. Your dentist will be happy to discuss costs with you as well as any risks/benefits and can offer their opinion on what is best suited for you.
